Durban couple’s crime spree undone by Facebook group

Durban – Facebook proved to be the undoing of an alleged thieving couple, accused of a spate of robberies at bed and breakfasts across Durban.

The lovers were nabbed at a shopping mall in Greyville on Sunday morning, after metro police officers on patrol had recognised their car from a picture and a crime alert that had gone viral on social media.

Police confirmed that the two were wanted in connection with a string of burglaries, which had seen them check into B&Bs posing as guests before spiriting away with electronic appliances.

Images of the couple and their gold-colour Toyota Corolla were captured by CCTV cameras at one of the establishments they are alleged to have robbed.

Placed on a crime alert group on Facebook, the images quickly spread across social media platforms with crime information networks appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

It is believed that their car was spotted on the rooftop parking lot at Game City in Greyville on Sunday morning, with metro police officers on patrol immediately recognising the make and registration number.

The two were arrested when they returned to their car.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said their investigation had shown that the couple may be linked to a number of unsolved robbery cases.

“They might be linked to a number of cases in and around Durban. The two suspects are due to appear in court soon.”
