Now is probably the best time to enjoy the scenic beauty of the rugged Wild Coast. This mostly untouched stretch of coastline, with its deserted sandy beaches, rolling hills, long summer days and friendly villagers, is one of my favourite destinations on the planet whenever I want to do nothing except relax with my family.
And after several retreats to this region, we always find ourselves at the magnificent Ocean View Hotel, which is situated in the hamlet of Coffee Bay.
The hotel itself is somewhat of an oasis of civilisation in the midst of wild splendour. Its tropical garden with neat lawns, a crystal-clear swimming pool and sparkling white hotel buildings are in stark contrast to the rugged bush, towering cliffs and turbulent waves that surround the hotel grounds.
Besides their staff being very helpful and polite from the moment one walks into the hotel’s reception, I have always found the bedrooms spotless and neat, and true to a beach holiday resort. They were actually designed to accommodate sandy feet, wet towels and afternoon naps with doors opening onto the sea breeze and the melody of the surf.
All rooms are comfortably-furnished with en-suite bathrooms, tea/coffee facilities and ceiling fans for hot days. The Sea View rooms have private patios from which you can relax and watch the Indian Ocean beating at the cliffs. Room and laundry service is also available.
My kids love their swimming pool, jungle gym and trampoline and I appreciate the fact that a child minder can be on hand to give me a break too.
The hotel garden’s gate opens straight onto a magnificent beach set between two prominent headlands while a lagoon, easily wadeable at most times, enters the ocean below one headland. The rocky feet of the headlands offer good snorkelling, excellent fishing and beachcombers will enjoy the shells and drift wood.
Ocean View Hotel’s restaurant is one of the best places to eat in the area. Meals may be enjoyed on the veranda with its view over of waving palm fronds, white beaches and the deep blue Indian Ocean. The hotel bar, situated next to the pool and a few steps from the beach, is also a great place to meet other guests and relax after an activity filled day.
Activities in the area abound – you can take long hikes and short walks, horse riding, canoeing, swimming and, as already mentioned, fishing, snorkelling and beachcombing.
Ocean View Hotel is a great place for a holiday and one I personally recommend. For more information, call 047 575 2005/6, email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit www.oceanview.co.za.
