Lionel Messi Expresses Gratitude After Breaking La Liga All-Time Record
Barcelona forward, Lionel Messi, has thanked his fans after breaking Telmo Zarra’s all-time La Liga goalscoring record.
Messi scored a hat-trick against Sevilla on Saturday to take his goal tally beyond Zarra’s long-standing record of 251 goals, with his current goal count at 253 goals.
After scoring in his first La Liga match since 18 October, Messi thanked his fans for their continued support in the face of recent criticism against him.
“When I scored this goal, I couldn’t imagine I could break any record, let alone this one previously held by the great Telmo Zarra,” the Argentine posted on his official Facebookpage.
“I was only able to achieve this because of the support I have had from so many people during my time here and I would like to dedicate this achievement to you all.”
Messi concluded by paying tribute to the departed figures that have played a part in his career, such as the late Tito Villanova, before reemphasizing his gratitude to the supporters who have stuck by him over the years.
“Thanks for always being with me. I would also like to dedicate this to the people who are no longer with us anymore. I will never forget you. Thank you everyone for standing with me!”
Telmo Zarra’s goal scoring record has stood for over 60 years, with the legendary Spaniard retiring from football in April 1954.
