Six of the best: Bonang gets done by Law

Bonang Matheba has taken her styling to extremes by hiring a globally respected ”stylist-to-the-stars”.

Matheba co-hosted the Metro awards last weekend in Durban, and wore six outfits during the two-hour show. She ran off the stage in her heels in between presenting to change from one glamorous outfit into another.

Matheba rocked the red carpet in a black and gold metallic column gown with sheer sleeves by Lebanese couturier Charbel Karam, which delighted the crowd. She also wore a 1920s-inspired tassel dress, a soft lavender suit with detailed bodice, a long black ball gown, a shocking pink and black striped dress and an intricate rose gold dress.

Fresh from styling US actress, singer and model Zendaya for the Weinstein Company’s pre-Oscars party, celebrity stylist Law Roach was flown in to style South Africa’s favourite media darling for the awards.

He brought with him 24 designer gowns for her to choose from, 20 pairs of shoes and jewellery worth millions of rands to transform the starlet.

Matheba has, over the past few months, solidified her international status, recently bagging the title of Los Angeles-based E! Entertainment’s official African correspondent responsible for red carpet coverage.

Roach, chosen by ”Queen B” to help her create the right image for the awards, is renowned for dressing A-list pop stars like Ariana Grande, and R&B songbirds Monica Brown and Brandy Norwood.

Styling Matheba for the first time, Roach, also known as ”Luxury Law”, says it was important for him to be in South Africa with Matheba to see things through and make sure all the dressing and changing happened seamlessly.

“I don’t look at any of my clients as being in different leagues, big or small, from others. Bonang to me is as exciting as the next client and we just clicked when we met. She knows what she wants, but is very adaptable to new things,” he said.

Roach believes that when styling a client, the focus needs to be on the girl and the type of occasion she’s attending. He says: “The client (and her personality) then channels my focus in a specific creative direction and that determines the looks.”

Roach’s style sense is influenced by vintage clothes. He’s a creative person whose love of fashion led him to establish a store in Chicago frequented by fashion designer and Real Friends rapper Kanye West.

The A-list fashion stylist says he uses big- name design houses but also believes in small unknown designers.

Matheba, who’s known to promote local designers like Gert-Johan Coetzee and take their designs global, says she went through the process of procuring a stylist in order to expand her fashion presentation and challenge herself to step out of her comfort zone.

“I gave Law a brief of what I required and he followed through, merging his personal elements into the process.”

Which one of the six dresses that she picked from the original 20 he brought was her favourite? Matheba says the rose-gold dress by Yousef Al’Jasmi caught her eye back in LA and she had to have it for the awards.
