Ajay Gupta’s son Kamal is getting married in Turkey‚ with the wedding planned for April 21 to 24‚ and it appears that President Jacob Zuma has not been invited.
According to the Mail & Guardian‚ the nuptials overlap with Zuma’s visit to Iran‚ which is just a three-hour flight away‚ from April 23 to 24. However‚ Bongani Majola‚ the president’s spokesperson‚ told the paper that he isn’t aware of Zuma having been invited.
Nor‚ the report suggested‚ did it appear that members of his cabinet have been invited either. “Usually they [the Gupta family] invite all cabinet ministers. Given the controversy around the influence of the Guptas‚ I don’t think there will be a single minister who will go to the wedding‚” an official told the M&G.
The Gupta family has been accused on state capture by using its links to Zuma to land business.
That it isn’t on the president’s official itinerary doesn’t mean Zuma won’t be going.
A report in Saudi media showing Zuma’s opening of a new military industrial complex‚ which is a said to be a joint venture between the countries‚ was omitted the Presidency’s report on the president’s trip last month.
A source in Antalya told the M&G that the Mardan Palace has been booked out for the wedding. The rooms at the palace generally run at R8,000 per person per night.
