Zuma should follow Dalindyebo to jail: Cope

President Jacob Zuma should be prosecuted and jailed like AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, Cope said on Thursday.

Zuma had to stop manipulating and damaging the country’s criminal justice system to avoid having his day in court, Congress of the People spokesperson Dennis Bloem said in a statement.

“He must answer all of the 700 charges he has tried to wriggle out of through abuse of power and the willing collusion of the whole of the ANC, SACP and Cosatu.

“His unwillingness to face prosecution in open court is an admission of guilt by fearful and manipulative behaviour. He must also stop abusing the taxpayers of our country by running up legal expenses which he does not have to pay from his pocket,” Bloem said.

Dalindyebo arrived at Wellington prison in Mthatha on Wednesday night, shortly before his midnight deadline, to start serving his 12-year sentence for assault, arson, and kidnapping. All of his court bids to avoid prison had failed.

His last attempt was presenting a “bogus” document to the NPA. It had apparently been signed by a King Stephen Khoza of the Nguni royal family and stated that his sentence and conviction had been suspended indefinitely.

The document came from a non-existent “United Kingdom of the Union of South Africa the commonwealth realms Republic of South Africa court”, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said.

The NPA was investigating the source of the document and intended to arrest the author.

Bloem called on the tripartite alliance to persuade Zuma to face prosecution, adding that his actions had damaged the country’s reputation and had brought tripartite alliance into serious disrepute.

“President Zuma will not evade justice for ever. The long arm of the law will clutch him in the end,” Bloem said.
